Cosmetic dermatology is a field that some dermatologists specialize in.  Many plastic surgeons are also skin MD, although the specialty is found in other types of medicine including dentistry.  Here’s a look at some of the most common elective procedures available today.

Face Lifts

Face lifts are not as popular as they once were .  Other procedures are less pricey , less invasive and may be just as effective.  However, it is the only procedure that get rid of wrinkles on every part of the face all at once .  Costs in the US range from $7,000 to $15,000 or more.

Injections

Collagen injections and Botox are very popular choices for eliminating wrinkles on specific areas of the face.  Portions of the face that can be targeted include the area around the eyes, at the corners of the mouth and from the nose to the mouth .  Injections can cost anywhere from $400 to $1000 per treatment. 

The treatments are not as long-lasting as a face lift, but the low cost makes them a popular choice .  The procedures can be done on an outpatient basis, usually in a medi spa facility or by a skin MD.

Chemical Peels

Chemical peels are used to loosen the outer layers of dead skin cells.  Over time , the outer layer peels off , revealing smoother more youthful looking skin.  The treatment can be used to even out skin tone, eliminate age spots, bring down fine lines or improve acne.

Several different types of chemical peels that are used in cosmetic dermatology .  The least irritating is composed of alpha hydroxy acids.  They are naturally occurring acids found in citrus fruit.

Beta hydroxy acids are even less irritating than alpha hydroxy acids, and have an increased ability to get deeper into the pore.  This is especially helpful for acne where dead skin cells clog the pores and cause inflammation that leads to pimples.  Salicylic acid is one of the beta hydroxy acids.  It is found in common aspirin.

Retinoic acid peels are stronger than alpha and beta hydroxy acids.  They provide a deeper peeling effect that is beneficial for reducing scars and some kinds of wrinkles .  Recovery time for this type of peel takes more time .
